Welcome 2008/09

This blog is intended to keep the lines of communication open and serve as a repository for ideas and resources between sessions. I hope that there will be a lively discourse on educational issues related to social studies and technology.

Please respond to this post to introduce yourself. I'm interested in how long you have been teaching, your favorite teaching memory, and your thoughts about the work we will be doing as a group.

Hey Martha! I'm glad to be here. Any way that I can utilize the computer more in the classroom is all right by me. I really would love to learn to use some of the programs that are on the laptop. I use Keynote, Pages, Neoffice, and of course the internet, but I would like to become more familiar with imovie and other programs so I can utilize all the great stuff on the laptop.

Hello. I was a classroom teacher for 22 years, and have always been excited about technology. I joined the WPS Technology Dept. three years ago, and now I get to use it all the time and share it with my colleagues! Looking forward to learning more!!

HI! I have been teaching for 8 years. The first 6 were in special education, working with LD, ADHD and behavior students. My favorite memory is when my social studies class, a composite of the above, was studying the Janjaweed in Sudan. They took the initiative to do something about the situation. With guidance, they held a school wide assembly where they educated their peers and convinced a large majority of the school to write letters to their representatives.

Apparently my first post was not deep enough. I'm coming at this from a very different perspective - I'm young, I'm fine with technology and computers, but I don't have a clue how to use it in the classroom. I grew up with technology at home, and for research, but a paper-and-pencil style high school, so I have trouble thinking of computers as having a place in the classroom.

Hi, my name is Fran. I have been teaching a long time, 37 years!!!My favorite teaching memory was team teaching at Brookside School and again this year with neighborhoods, which is a form of team teaching. I am excited to learn new technology so that I can feel comfortable using it with my students. Thanks!!

Jake,
Welcome aboard! I teach eighth grade, so the kids are really pretty comfortable with the laptops. Feel free to come visit any time. The more classrooms you can see, the better!
